hadn't seen this since it came out at the cinema (22 years ago?!). it’s obviously great but…
i thought it was a second tier ghibli when i first saw it and rewatching it didn’t really change that. the surface of the film is of course incredible (though the 3d sections are a bit incongruous) but i don’t get that feeling of depth that other miyazaki films have. perhaps because i dont know enough about japanese folk lore etc to get the allusions.
