They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
Watched on 2026-05-03

Enjoyable enough to paper over the cracks in the underpinning thesis. Felt like a 80s John Carpenter film (Big Trouble in Little China, They Live) and would have benefited from being the length of an 80s John Carpenter film (a tight 90mins instead of baggy two hours plus)
The fake film grain was annoying and also part of a larger problem with the film not really knowing what it’s aesthetic is, it felt unfocused, sometimes it’s 70 blacksploitation (typograph, fake film grain), there’s a heavy 80s-90s feel to some of the sets. People use flip phones, but also an off hand reference t block chain stuff (if there’s anything that tells you a film was written/ filmed between 2020 and 2023 it’s characters casually mentioning block chain). Maybe it’s trying for the out-of-timeness of things like It Follows but I don’t think it quite manages that.
Still, good performances and a decent way to pass a Sunday morning.
